The Smart Car in fact began with Nicolas Hayek, the inventor of Swatch watches, with the designer looking to produce a line of vehicles that were fuel efficient, environmentally responsible and easy to park in small spaces. Smart car development began in 1994 with the first car being unveiled to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997. However, what many people did not realise is that the Smart car was an idea first thought of by Mercedes-Benz engineer Johann Tomforde when he began to explore city car concepts many years before.
Incredibly popular on Europe's roads, today the Smart Car is small in structure but big on economy, offering many benefits and advantages to motorists. Smart cars are among some of the most recognised vehicles available, they are affordable, and they have excellent safety features in place such as the Tridion Safet Call frame which is in many ways Smart car's claim to fame.
